Greetings to New Faculty -
Welcome to UNCG and to the College of Arts and Sciences! I hope that you are settling into your new position here and finding your way around Greensboro (if you are new to the area), and that you are being provided with the support you need to start accomplishing the work you have come here to do.
There is a lot for you to learn as a new member of the faculty and much of that learning will take place slowly as you become familiar with the institution. However, I think it will be useful for you to have some materials to provide a quick overview of some of the more important aspects of academic life at UNCG, and to keep available for reference in the future. Hence this “New Faculty Handbook.”
Inside you will find material describing major features of College governance as well as policies and procedures on such important matters as Promotion and Tenure, Annual Review, Post-Tenure Review, and other matters relating to your work as a member of the College faculty. In addition, we’ve included material from the UNCG Faculty Handbook on Family and Medical Leave, Benefits, Research Assignments, and Requests for Extension of the Probationary Period, as well as general information on applying for external grants and contracts, including fellowships. Your Department Head will be glad to direct you to more complete information on any of these matters, or help you with questions not answered in these materials. This Handbook is intended for reference and not for deep and careful study. However, I recommend that you glance through it to acquaint yourself with the ways in which the College conducts its business as an academic community, to which I am very pleased to welcome you. If I or any of the Dean’s Office staff can help you settle comfortably into life as a member of the College of Arts and Sciences, please get in touch.
